Bellevue Art Museum Biennial

I've been selected to be in the Bellevue Arts Museum's Northwest Biennial in 2010 August 28, 2010-January 16 2011. This is the first installment of the biennial. The Feast of the Fallen will continue my experimentation with three dimensional, sequential, visual narrative. In comics, we understand the narrative as a series of sequential panels. The space between the panels (the gutter) is filled in by the mind of the reader. What if the gutter were three-dimensional? How do you perceive the narrative if the images are part of an object as opposed to two-dimensional? For this installation, I will use drawn images on the forms of storage jars, pitchers and platters to tell the story of a John Barleycorn-like character. Each vessel will be a “page” of the story. The table will be laden with the accoutrement of a feast. The table arrangement will reference Dutch still-life painting as well as Vermeer’s The Milkmaid. The vanitas tradition in Dutch painting juxtaposes the wealth of domestic plenty with the eventuality of death. The pots will have several simultaneous meanings–they will act as monument, as memorial feast, as mythic narrative– all wrapped in the sensuality of a ceramic vessel.
